This
is a service for those who find it hard to make use of public
transport.
|
The
community car scheme provides a service for people who are unable
to use, or have difficulty with access to, public transport.
Its
main aim is to help people with journeys which they are unable
to make. These
journeys may be to attend appointments, help with shopping and
visits for social reasons.
The
scheme has been set up in various parts of Lochaber with small
clusters of volunteer drivers and telephonists.
Some
reasons why the car scheme can be very helpful:
- For
appointments with the doctor, optician or chiropodist, etc.
- If
you are suffering from ill health.
- For
a temporary period while recovering from an operation or injury.
- You
may be seeing less of friends than before because its difficult
to get on a bus or walk any distance.
- You
or the driver in the family has had to give up the car.
- Maybe
your family have moved away or are just on holiday for a few
weeks. ( Many neighbours help a great deal but can't always
be there ).
- To
stop isolation and help participation in community activities.
- In
a rural area you may only need help to get to a bus, ferry
or train.
To
find out about the scheme and how to use it, follow the How
it Works
link
opposite - or download and read the Car
Scheme Leaflet.
There
is also information about Volunteer
Drivers: what they do and how to become one.
The
scheme has been in
operation for a year now
Our
aims for year 2 are:
- to
encourage scheme clusters in other areas;
- to
provide a wider range of training options;
- to
identify other gaps in transport;
- to
complete an evaluation of the first two years of the car scheme.
