about what volunteering to be a Handyperson involves and how to
go about it.

Volunteering
We
ask that volunteers will
- Keep
the Coordinator informed of their availability
- Where
convenient, respond to requests from the Coordinator
- On
visiting a client, assess the work required and, if appropriate,
carry out the job
- Keep
records concerning all visits on the Visiting Record Form
- Keep
an eye out for safety hazards, home security issues or other
pronblems in a client's home
- Report
on the Visiting Record Form whether they think any further
action is necessary
Volunteers
must not
- Carry
out gutter or roof work
- Carry
out work beyond their expertise
- Carry
out major tasks
- Carry
out work without the knowledge of the Handyperson Coordinator
- Lift
or move people
- Undertake
removals
- Do
housework
- Accept
payment for services
Volunteers
need
- A
suitable trade or DIY skill
- A
basic toolkit eg screwdriver, hammer, drill
- A
genuine interest in, and concern for, people
- Patience
and flexibility
- A
telephone
- References
The
Handyperson Scheme will provide
- Travelling
and telephone expenses
- Support
and backup from the coordinator

- An
informal interview will be arranged
- You
will be asked to give the names of two referees
- If
the references are acceptable, you will be asked to call back
and briefed on:
- The
aims and objectives of teh scheme
- How
the scheme is run
- What
is expected of volunteers
- Safety
and insurance cover
- Monioring
arrangements
- Dealing
with emergencies
