Knocking Down Barriers Together

The National Lottery New Opportunities Fund awarded people with a learning disability in Highland £800,000.

With extra help from Highland Council and the Health Board, Health & Happiness has over one million pounds to start to make the lives of people with learning disabilities in Highland healthier and happier.

This was the inaugural Health & Happiness Conference. It took place on Friday 4th October 2002 at the Caledonian Thistle F.C. Stadium in Inverness.

People with a learning disability led the Conference.

We talked about how the money will be used and what will be happening next.

We also talked about what it is like to live with a learning disability and what barriers there are to being healthy and happy - and how we could break them down together:

1.

'The way people think about us and treat us'

2.

'We don't have many people that we can turn to for help and friendship'

3.

'We don't feel important or in control of our lives'

4.

'Few of us have jobs so we don't have the money to do the things we'd like to do'
5.
'Our health problems are too often ignored and we don't get the best service'

It was a very exciting day, something really special. The discussions and workshops were very good. Everyone had a good time.

We are writing a conference report and will post it here when it's ready.
