To promote to national, local and European policy-makers and the general public, the effectiveness of the HCCF Network's role in modernising community care in Highland

What have we achieved?

This has been a good year for HCCF.

Malcolm Chisholm, Deputy Minister for Health and Community Care visited HCCF in May, meeting users, carers and staff. He credited HUG as being:

"One of the most innovative Scottish projects leading the way in user-involvement and challenging negative images surrounding mental illness and raising an understanding of mental health issues".

This endorsement was reinforced during Mr Chisholm's address to the Scottish Community Care Forum's annual conference in Edinburgh later in the month.

The Scottish Community Care Forum's Good Practice Awards recognised the work of the Carers Project and HUG - The Carers Project work on developing a new Carers Assessment Process and Form was runner up and HUG's Educational Work was highly commended.

The pharmaceuticals company GlaxoSmithKline awarded the Carers Project £25,000 as part of their IMPACT Awards for 2001. Working with the Kings Fund the company gives 10 awards in the UK for outstanding work in the field of community health care.

Garry Robertson, a Director of HCCF and member of HUG, received a note from the Highland Primary Care NHS Trust to 'formally thank you for your essential input to the latest Mental Health Wellbeing Development Fund Bid. It is crucial that this new service (A Place of Safety) reflects the service users needs and views. Your work allowed this to be so'.

Over the year HCCF has been contacted by groups from Orkney in the North to Dumfries in the South interested in learning from our experience.
